There are times Planet Earth
seems so vast and the problems of the world seem so much…err…vaster
that this little nickel
and dime dog and pony
show I write for Dom's View seems so inconsequential in
the scheme of things.
Just when I am feeling the
most insignificant, something comes along that allows me to poke
fun at a church and I realize that being The Grand Poobah
for Life of The Populist Guard gives me a much greater platform
than your average
Dominant.
And,
that's when I realize that, once again, the Universe is unfolding
as it should.
My last
column touched briefly on two issues that are still causing
ripples. Therefore, as far as I am concerned it's worth returning
to:
1). Gay Marriage
2). Why we can't rent any good BDSM videos even though Mel Gibson
can depict a flogging in his blockbuster movie about that
Christ fellow.
First up: Gay
Marriage. Americans still seem to be twisting themselves
into knots (no pun intended) in an effort to avoid the possibility
that Adam
and Steve may legally marry. While everyone from the
neo-cons
to The
President of the United States yabber on about a
constitutional amendment, there are some news organizations
prepared to take a deeper look into the issue. The American Broadcasting
System, more commonly known as ABC, not only asks Are
Gay Rights Civil Rights? , but looks beyond America's
borders and posts a rather long article on the
dangers of being gay.
Those of us lucky enough to live above the 49th
parallel, already know that those who are fighting battle
against Gay Marriage have already lost. Here in Canada, we got
Gay Marriage coming out the wazoo, to put it mildly. Now the worry
has turned to whether Canada
is becoming a refugee haven for Gays. Could all of this
explain why Canada's
live birth rate is dropping?
While America is busy trying
to
export its values to Iraq one American is doing his level
best to export
American values to Great Britain.
America has so much to teach the world about freedom
and human
rights. As an American I am proud of the stand the government
has taken on First
Amendment Rights and know the federal government will
soon tell the AFA
where to go.
Let's move to the topic
of BDSM videos. My joke in the last issue that Mel
Gibson can depict the brutal
flogging of Jesus, while kinksters
cannot rent a decent BDSM
video tape seems to have been taken to heart by loyal
reader, the Honourable Judge R.R. Low of the Provincial Court
of British Columbia. In a landmark ruling, which, as of this writing,
has yet to appear in the mainstream press, he says that BDSM videos
do not offend the standards of the average Canadian community.
While the press has, so far, ignored this major ruling, you can
read
the actual court decision. For once, I'm not joking.
Maybe BDSM is simply moving into the mainstream and we have nothing
left to worry about. I point to an article that depicts a normal
BDSM relationship, without sensationalizing: A
couple in love, Top to Bottom
Want more proof we are going mainstream? The Toronto Star, not
a newspaper to push limits either hard or soft, provides
its readers with spanking advice, while a
story about rape fantasies gone wrong can find its way
onto CNN with nary a raised eyebrow.
The mainstreaming of WIITWD
is all around us. A stodgy
British newspaper advises their readers on fetishes and
Dan Savage, a known quantity, appears
in more and more newspapers all the time.
Since the lifestyle is going mainstream, soon I will have nothing
left to fight. That's why I am taking up a collection for NATO
troops overseas and buying stock in two British enterprises:
Virgin
Atlantic Airways and a meat
company. I want to be ready when WIITWD
is no longer dirty and I can no longer make a buck from it.
