One
of the most frequent comments heard by those ‘in’ the BDSM community,
when approached by a new member is, ‘I didn’t know there were
others here in the Pueblo’.
Urges Start Early.
I remember feeling the same way years ago when I found a local
group, which I could grow and learn with. Although
my BDSM tendencies started from an early age, I was afraid to
admit them to my so-called ‘vanilla’ partners. Nowadays,
I look back and wonder
just how many of them were afraid to admit it to me also.
Up to 50% of the Population
BDSM is a sexual orientation found in a good percentage of the
population. Recent reports calculate 7
to 14% practice BDSM, with up to 50% of the population BDSM-curious.
These people come from all walks of life; Professionals, celebrities,
office workers, etc.
Not all
Whips and Chains
Contrary to the image produced by mass media, BDSM is not all
whips and chains. It is not ‘spousal abuse’, nor sexist.
The Dominant or submissive can be of either gender. When
taught and practiced in a proper environment, with the proper
mindset, BDSM is not dangerous.
Safe, Sane, and Consensual
In fact, the community motto is ‘Safe, Sane, and Consensual’.
That means that the participants are all voluntarily involved
in each ‘scene’. There are certain safety checks in place.
Safewords to stop a scene. SafeCalls to friends when meeting
someone for the first time. Dungeon Masters, who act as a safety
officer and keep an unbiased eye on all scenes.
BDSM People are Everywhere.
They could be the person sitting next to you on the bus, your
co-worker, even your spouse/partner. And yes, BDSM
people are in the Pueblos. They’ve been here for a long
time. You are not alone.
