Is BDSM Limiting Your Life?
Master Gharlane

Over the past few months I have been growing increasingly frustrated with what I see as the limits of the Scene. This being it's one dimensionality and it's rigidity. Strong words, so what do I mean by them? To explain this I need to talk about my frustrations.

Simply put, my sexuality is not limited to just BDSM. There are many more aspects of sexuality I want to explore. Polyamory, swinging, erotic massage, jack & jill'ing, tantra, etc, etc, etc. None of these can I explore within the Scene because it is so one-dimensional. You are in the Scene because of BDSM and BDSM only. For the most part, most of the people I meet in the Scene are fairly sexually conservative with the exception of their BDSM desires. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this but I am feeling increasingly constrained by it.

It's not just sexuality though. I have interests in environmentalism, spirituality and so forth. Rarely does anyone talk about things other than BDSM and when they do it is just in passing conversation. For example, from hearing lots of muttered comments I'm convinced there are many Pagans within the Scene who keep a very low profile. I'm not a Pagan, though I have a lot of respect for it, but it does make me wonder why they keep such a low profile.

This is where the rigidity of the Scene comes in. To me there seems to be an element that actively discourages blending BDSM with other forms of sexuality. Why, I've even heard vanilla sex being scorned at occasionally. All this seems to stop sub-groups from readily forming within the Scene. Where are all the Pagan BDSM parties?

All this gets me wondering if it's just me or are there other people who have similar frustrations? Are there other people with more diverse sexualities than BDSM, more diverse interests than BDSM? Are there people who wish they knew other people where they could explore all their interests together rather than having to compartmentalize their lives by have many different groups to interact with?

How do people manage multi-dimensional interests and desires within their lives?
