Flogging
by Nova

Floggers, as with all other toys that we use, are merely tools of our intentions. Hanging in the store they are limp, lifeless inanimate objects that are are devoid of their own consciousness until we allow them to meld with our own bodies. The tool and the body are one.

With constant practice you will learn to mesh with and allow this tool to become not just a toy in your hand, but an extension of your arm and eventually your body.

To properly utilize any tool may take weeks or even months of dedicated practice. The user must possess the desire to become the most proficient that his body and mind allow him to be. Practice should start out simple, not striking an object. Just smoothly swinging the flogger back and forth in front of you.

Relaxation is the key to becoming one with the energy of your partner. In the privacy of your own home feel free to take off your shoes so your bare feet are on the ground. Pick a type of music that is limited in words, something that flows with your personal energy.

Separate your legs loosen your shoulders breathe evenly. Close your eyes and think of something that energizes your passionate side.

Swing the flogger in great arcs.

Side to side, down and then back up. Diagonally starting from the top and then the bottom. With practice you will learn to blend all of these arcs together smoothly.

Allow your torso to turn with the strokes, keep your knees flexed, and move smoothly around the room.

Feel the energy that comes from within and creates movement in the air. Become one with the wind...

Knowing your Flogger

Floggers are by far the most erotic of the tools that I use during a BDSM scene. It can be used as a tool to bring great pleasure or moderate pain. Originally the used by the Romans the flagellum and cat-o-nine tails were also used in the British Navy for punishment. These tools of flagellation, at that time stood for power and control and were feared because of the awesome damage that they would inflict upon the unwilling victim.

In BDSM they still represent power to an extent and are looked at more in awe when used to create intense pleasure in the right hands. It is an art form in that it takes lots of dedicated practice, training and knowledge to create the right sensations. You cannot just wake up one morning and grab a flogger and and possess the ability to effectively create a scene. There are many different variations of floggers. Different weights, lengths and suppleness of leather create totally different sensations. All of this must be taken into account when selecting a flogger for your use. It must feel like a part of you, an extension of your expression and not merely a tool that you picked up and placed in your hand. A lighter flogger will soften the strike and a heavy flogger will intensify the impact of the strike.

As Doms/Dommes it is our responsibility to familiarize ourselves with our tools and to ensure safety and responsibility when utilizing these tools. We must be willing to practice and take advice from others that are also knowledgeable in the use of our selected tool.

Even when taking every precaution and learning about all of the off limits areas on the body and practicing all of the time sometimes our aim is not true. At times like these I approach the sub and soothe the area with my hand and assure her that everything is okay. I may speak with her to be sure that she has a desire to continue, most times she does because she knows that I am acknowledging her unintentional pain and am aware of the misjudgment in my aim.

Education is very important and also the responsibility of the submissive. Without this knowledge he/she may inadvertently end up being subject to a flogging that is more painful than they were expecting. He/she must also be sure to use their safe words when something is to their disliking.
